Embracing Mediocrity: A Realistic Pathway to Happiness
After a life time of unremarkable, ordinariness, I obtained my DM (Doctorate of Mediocrity) in coffee shop philosophy here in Boulder and pioneered nonscientific research in unavoidable human averageness. Many are frustrated with the long held notion that hard work equals success and achievement which leads to rewards that in turn bring happiness in the modern world. I will present exciting, unsubstantiated - yet not entirely fabricated - data, research and statistical analysis that shows why the popular success/achievement world view is so prevalent despite its ineffectiveness AND how embracing our own inevitable mediocrity will inspire a new freedom, passion… more

How To Advance Mankind By Voting The Dummies Off The Island
Can man and woman kind change its nature? If we expect to truly advance as a civilization we are going to have to move beyond debate on certain issues. We have already changed to some extent, just look at the difference between a caveman and David Beckham. I will give real world strategies on how to end debate on issues from the BCS National Championship to more quickly recognizing and rooting out true evils in the world. It's fun. It's serious. It will light a fire under your ass to make change.

Let the kids blow things up.
Tired of hearing about how bad the US is doing at science? I think it's high time we start letting kids blow stuff up. I'll explain why everyone needs a shed, basement lab, or backyard where they can do all sorts of cool, dangerous things.

Create
Remember when you were a kid and painted with your fingers or a brush or maybe your forehead, and it was all good? Remember when somebody put it on some refrigerator or kegerator or something, and you were all proud? Then remember some years later when you'd draw something, realize it was just horrible, and then scribble it out before someone else saw it? Then remember when you quit altogether, and it was all bad? Now it's time for the next phase. Get away from self-consciousness or laziness; get back to creating.

10 Ways Geeks Have Doomed Us All - The Importance of the Prime Directive
The Prime Directive is the most important principle we can ever learn from Star Trek. It's the principle of non-interference in lesser-developed cultures.
We break this rule every day as Geeks, usually helping people to fix their computers.
But what about real, world-changing implications? There have been quite a few. Let's examine how Geeks have Doomed Us All.

Colorado Mushrooms You Should Not Eat Under Any Circumstances
So it happens to us all. You've just spent four nights in the backwoods summiting five 14ers in four days when suddenly your iPhone GPS gives out and you eat your last Clif bar. Now what? Gaming the System: How Gameplay Can Revolutionize Education, or just about anything.
The "system" is broken, we cannot possibly produce students of tomorrow using techniques that resemble the industrial assembly lines of yesterday. We live in a new frantic, information overloaded, plugged in double half caf whole milk hold the foam add soy just because I like to say it, world, that "traditional methods" are lagging far behind. In this new world we need to engage, foster communities and share knowledge. Quoting Einstein: "games are the most elevated form of investigation." I think there is hope, I think we can work at play and play at work. Won't you give me 5… more
