  1. Embracing Mediocrity: A Realistic Pathway to Happiness

After a life time of unremarkable, ordinariness, I obtained my DM (Doctorate of Mediocrity) in coffee shop philosophy here in Boulder and pioneered nonscientific research in unavoidable human averageness. Many are frustrated with the long held notion that hard work equals success and achievement which leads to rewards that in turn bring happiness in the modern world. I will present exciting, unsubstantiated - yet not entirely fabricated - data, research and statistical analysis that shows why the popular success/achievement world view is so prevalent despite its ineffectiveness AND how embracing our own inevitable mediocrity will inspire a new freedom, passion…

    • Avatar, BOTOX, & Winter Park - The Children's Hospital's unique Rx for kids with cerebral palsy

You could call it a prescription for mobility, for independence, for confidence, for self-esteem . . . a prescription for hope. A biomedical engineer from The Children's Hospital tells the story of his favorite patient and good friend Evan - the nicest kid you will ever meet. Evan has cerebral palsy (CP). CP is a term used to describe a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement. CP makes walking and other everyday tasks a challenge for Evan. Find out how The Children's Hospital is using the same motion capture technology (a.k.a. MoCap) used in Hollywood blockbusters like Avatar,…

      • How To Advance Mankind By Voting The Dummies Off The Island

Can man and woman kind change its nature? If we expect to truly advance as a civilization we are going to have to move beyond debate on certain issues. We have already changed to some extent, just look at the difference between a caveman and David Beckham. I will give real world strategies on how to end debate on issues from the BCS National Championship to more quickly recognizing and rooting out true evils in the world. It's fun. It's serious. It will light a fire under your ass to make change.

          • Let the kids blow things up.

Tired of hearing about how bad the US is doing at science? I think it's high time we start letting kids blow stuff up. I'll explain why everyone needs a shed, basement lab, or backyard where they can do all sorts of cool, dangerous things.

            • Create

Remember when you were a kid and painted with your fingers or a brush or maybe your forehead, and it was all good? Remember when somebody put it on some refrigerator or kegerator or something, and you were all proud? Then remember some years later when you'd draw something, realize it was just horrible, and then scribble it out before someone else saw it? Then remember when you quit altogether, and it was all bad? Now it's time for the next phase. Get away from self-consciousness or laziness; get back to creating.

              • Body Awareness for Folks Who Really Love Technology

Do your shoulders perpetually hunch? Fingers curl from spending all your time on your iGod? For being in the land of the uber-athlete many of us only do marathon sessions that involve keyboards. We'll go over some basic, quick yoga moves to return fluidity to your geek form in those few, precious moments you aren't creating the latest, most awesome start-up. I can't take you outside in the sunshine, but I can help you look a little less uptight and more attractive with your posture.

                • How my grandmother escaped the Nazis during WWII- Lessons Learned & Why You Should Give a Crap

This is a true story about my grandmother's experience in Nazi occupied Austria as a translator for the Germans in a work camp...they had no idea she was Jewish. I haven't told this story to many folks, so I figure I would share it, along with the lessons I have taken from it - in my life- with 800 of my closest friends.

                  • Sex on Ice: Should You Fear Subliminal Advertising?

When an advertiser subtly imbeds the word “sex” in the ice cubes of an alcohol advertisement, does it cause you to run out, buy the product, and get wasted? Peter McGraw, the moderately funny CU professor, returns to Ignite to answer this question and tell you what you really should fear from the world of advertising.

                    • Hope Plays Baseball: I'd Totally Hit for the Same Team if I Could Do Joan Holloway

Men will always harbor fantasies about women with other women...

"What would it take for MY girl to hit for the same team?"
"Do I have a chance in hell of seeing this in my lifetime?"

Gentlemen, have no fear: hope plays baseball. Personally, I'd totally hit for the same team if I could do Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) - find out what it takes for women to indulge your hope and turn fantasies into realities.

What's a single? A double? A bunt? Where do two drunk girls making out in the bathroom at Jet figure into the equation?

                      All…

                      • 20 questions for a creative first date

Find out who you're REALLY dating by asking better questions. Instead of, "So, where were you born?" try, "What 5 foods would you want on a desert isle?" Transform "What brought you to Boulder?" [insert yawn here]... into "When was the last time you had sand in your pants?" Uncover hidden hopes and dreams, and find out what's in their freezer. Better questions make for better answers, which make for all the difference in the search for your possible suitor.

Watching The Madre explore her new iPhone has taken me back to the fundamentals of new product UX - how does user behavior change when a product crosses the chasm? As product managers, how should we anticipate and support the leap? And how do you make sure a leopard-print-loving 63-year-old woman uses her new toy for good instead of evil? All this and more...

The Prime Directive is the most important principle we can ever learn from Star Trek. It's the principle of non-interference in lesser-developed cultures.

We break this rule every day as Geeks, usually helping people to fix their computers.

But what about real, world-changing implications? There have been quite a few. Let's examine how Geeks have Doomed Us All.

I've always had a problem with this, so I've decided to attack my problem head on!

Also the night of the presentation is my commencement ceremony (yup, I'm graduating), so I may present in a cap and gown and have to leave early! I'll be watching the rest of the speakers with my friend's iphone while waiting to get my diploma.

                                    • Colorado Mushrooms You Should Not Eat Under Any Circumstances
